How to Install GNOME Desktop?

If you are not experienced with Linux command line, you may want to install desktop environment on your VPS or a dedicated server.

This tutorial consist three parts. GNOME on CentOS 6, KDE on CentOS 7 and GNOME GUI on CentOS 7.

Follow These Steps to Install GNOME Desktop on CentOS 6

The most popular desktop environment is called GNOME. It lets you simplify the administration process of your Linux server. Please note that desktop environment installation requires resources, so we recommend upgrading your server to at least 512 MB of RAM before you begin the installation process.

yum -y groupinstall Desktop
yum -y install tigervnc-server xorg-x11-fonts-Type1 firefox

You will require a password to access your desktops.

Starting applications specified in /root/.vnc/xstartup

Note: you must use port 1 while connecting

You will be asked for a password, which you have already typed in step 3:
Finally, connect to your desktop environment.

How to Install KDE on CentOS 7?

Another popular Desktop environment is called KDE. And here is how to install KDE on your CentOS server:

yum -y groupinstall “KDE Desktop”
yum -y install tigervnc-server xorg-x11-fonts-Type1 firefox

You will require a password to access your desktops.

Note: Enter your_IP:1 and password you typed in step 3.

How to Install GNOME GUI on CentOS 7?

Installation process of GNOME GUI on CentOS 7 is a little bit different from CentOS 6. Here is how to install GNOME GUI on CentOS 7.

yum group list

Note that the process will take about 30 minutes

yum -y groupinstall ‘Server with GUI’

After the installation is finished, you must change system run level value to 5. It can be done with systemctl command below:

systemctl enable graphical.target –force
yum install tigervnc-server.x86_64
vncserver

You will require a password to access your desktops.

Verify:

Enter your password and log in to your server via your VNC client – IP:1:
